Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

A comforting classic combining savory ground lamb or beef, vegetables, and a mashed potato topping baked until golden.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Boil potatoes until tender; drain, then mash with butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté onion and garlic until soft. Add ground meat and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in carrots and cook for a few minutes. Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and peas; simmer until thickened. Season to taste.
  5. Spread the meat mixture into a baking dish and top with the mashed potatoes, using a fork to create ridges on the surface.
  6. Bake for 20‑25 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  7. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
